In the US, the conversation would have gone like this:

me: Hay, skipper. Can I climb the rigging and get a shot?
skipper: inhales loudly through teeth I don’t know about that. Maybe if you wait unitl we’re docked and I have you sign some papers. Also, we’ll have to grab the safety harness and somebody to belay. Maybe you should just try holding the camera over your head.

This is how it happened in Mexico:

me: Hay, skipper. Can I climb the rigging and get a shot?
skipper: when you fall off and wreck your face, is it my fault?
me: lol, no
skipper: have fun. See if you can get to the crow’s nest.

I think I like it better there.
