“He went that-a-way!”

It was awesome. Star, Sean and I were at an intersection in North Hollywood, and we saw a truck get pulled over. Nothing looked out of the ordinary until the truck jumped the curb, and the driver took off sprinting down the road. Two cops went after him on foot, while one squadcar gave chase. We made our right turn, pulled over, and saw the dude running back down the alley towards Sean’s car. He cut a sharp left and vanished into a neighborhood, while a squad car whizzed past him.

Five seconds later, a wheezing cop emerged from the alley and looked around as the three of us in the car pointed East and told the cop exactly which-a-way the dude went. We expected the cop to take off running to catch the mugger/arsonist/puppykiller, but he just stood dumbstruck, catching his breath.

We spent the rest of our drive to Original Thai hoping that the dude would try to carjack us. This is why I moved to LA.

Conairh’s response to yesterday’s Intercomplication post might be best plan so far. It’s all the benefits of a landline, but cellular. Good thinking. I just have to find the cheapest phone/minutes possible with the 818 area code.

The biggest flaw I see is the way that disposable numbers get passed around the dregs of society. I’m sure that the phone would be getting a lot of calls from crackheads and bookies. Hopefully there’ll be a way to make the phone silent, except for calls from the gate number.

In response to Brooke’s question, no. Google Voice cannot forward to Google Voice numbers.

Anybody else have bright ideas?

By this time next month, Sean and I will be living in a new place. This brings up an important decision:

Who gets their phone tied to the entry system?

Rather than using the classic hardwired intercom system of yore, this place uses an entry system that calls a set phone number, requiring someone to answer and push a button to open the door. This system works great with landlines, but not so much with cellphones wielded by people who can’t always answer them.

I want to find a service that allows the system to ring both of our phones when somebody punches our number. The initial plan was to tie the entry system to a google voice number, and have that number forward calls to both of our phones. Unfortunately, GV doesn’t let users forward numbers to phones that already have a GV number going into it. Since Sean and I both use Google Voice numbers for business, this is a complete bust.

The challenge now is to find a method that will forward one single number (the entry system) to both phones. I considered using the podcast’s Skype number, but their forwarding system has no way of being selective with forwards.

Current options:

Get a landline just for the gate
Set the entry system’s GV voicemail to just play the tone that opens the door

The first option costs money, and revokes us of “I don’t have a landline!” cred. The second option is a security issue. What am I missing?
